A tourist visa is also referred to as a visitor visa or a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). It is a document which is provided to the foreign nationals to travel and enter canada. A visitor visa is required by every student, worker or a tourist. There are two types of visitor visas in Canada – single entry visas and multiple entry visas.

A single entry visa allows the foreign nationals to enter Canada for one time only whereas if a person has a multiple visa, he can enter and leave Canada as many times as he wants till the visa is valid.

How to apply for a visitor visa?

To be eligible to sponsor a family member to Canada, a person must be:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • The sponsor and the relative must sign an agreement that if the person coming to Canada is unable to support himself financially, then the sponsor will provide financial support.

In addition to this, if you are sponsoring a dependent child then you will have to support the child financially for 10 years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first.

Who needs an eTA?

An electronic travel authorisation is required by those travellers who belong to those countries where citizens do not require a visa to visit Canada.

The eTA is only needed if a person is travelling by air.

Extension of stay

A visitor visa allows a person to stay in Canada for a maximum 6 months at a time. If any person wants to stay beyond this time period, he/she must apply to do so before 30 days from the expiration of the status.

Do you need a transit visa?

A transit visa is required by individuals who belong to visa exempt countries and have a stay in Canada for less than 48 hours.
